Osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint is accompanied by swelling, severe pain in the shoulder and limited range of motion. The causes and symptoms of the disease, existing treatment methods and ways to help at home will be discussed later in the article.

What is shoulder osteoarthritis
The shoulder joint has a very complex structure and is the most mobile of all, providing the human body with the most complete range of movements. The shoulder joint capsule can stretch very strongly, thanks to which a person can raise his arm vertically and make rotational movements with it.This activity weakens the ligaments and, as a result of the sharp flexion of the tendons, slight ischemia is often observed in them.
It is the lack of nutrition of the articular tissue that poses the main threat to its destruction and drives the development of pathology.
The disease, which is mainly expressed in the degeneration of the tissues of the shoulder joint, is called arthrosis of the shoulder joint or arthrosis of the shoulder.Shoulder biomechanics is based on the impeccable functioning of all components: normal nerve conduction, good blood supply, impeccable anatomical structure.Violation of any of these conditions invariably leads to the fact that internal tissues begin to deform, causing discomfort, limitation of movement and pain.
Arthrosis (or osteoarthritis) is, first of all, a non-inflammatory disease, but of a degenerative nature. It is associated with ischemic processes in the surrounding tissues caused by various reasons.
As a result, the nutrition of the joint is disturbed, causing the thin, elastic layer of hyaline cartilage covering the head of the bone to become thinner.By becoming less elastic and thinner, hyaline cartilage makes normal movement difficult, narrowing the joint space.
This phenomenon forces the body to act, and bone spurs called osteophytes form along the edges of the joint. It is the osteophytes with their sharp edges that damage muscles and ligaments, causing chronic low-grade inflammation.
The main danger of osteoarthritis lies in the fact that a slight limitation in arm mobility invariably leads to a decrease in range of motion.
Without moving, the shoulder begins to suffer from the accumulation of salts in the tissues surrounding the joint and the deterioration of the nutrition of the joint tissues.Over time, this can cause the formation of joint contractures - limitation of movement or complete loss of shoulder mobility and disability of the patient.
Causes of shoulder osteoarthritis
The only cause of shoulder arthrosis is deep ischemia, that is, a sharp or gradual deterioration of the blood supply to certain areas of the tissue and depletion of joint nutrition. But this reason is caused by factors that may be present in the anamnesis, individually or simultaneously:
- Shoulder injuries. These can be obvious injuries sustained as a result of a car accident or fall, or hidden tears of muscles and ligaments sustained during sports training or hard work.Any joint injury always has the ability to remember, since the affected areas are not restored to their full size and the conductivity in them is invariably impaired. The body can successfully cope with this for several years or decades, until aging begins.
- Age-related changes in the body.
- Infectious attacks causing arthritis.
- Metabolic and hormonal disorders, also often associated with age.
- Hereditary or genetic predisposition.
Stages and symptoms of arthrosis of the shoulder joint
The disease goes through several stages of development.Because osteoarthritis is a chronic disease that progresses slowly, most patients ignore the first stage, during which joint deformation can be combatted more effectively.
- First stage symptoms. For the first time, the patient may feel some discomfort when moving the hand when the hyaline cartilage is thinning.A sudden swing or jolt is not accompanied by pain, this is explained by the fact that there are no nerve endings in the cartilage and its destruction does not cause pain. But sometimes, at night or at the end of training, shoulder pain starts to bother me.This is often overlooked, attributing it to muscle pain or neuralgia. But the disease began, almost asymptomatically, and if immediate measures are not taken, it will enter the second phase.
- Second stage symptoms. If the patient feels pain when moving the arm, accompanied by a clearly audible click, this means that osteophytes have formed in the joint. From this moment on, the shoulder is constantly injured by the sharp edges of the bony protuberances, causing inflammation of the surrounding tissues. This is expressed by morning stiffness, which disappears only after joint development, or pain during habitual physical activity or nighttime fatigue.
A person's well-being worsens as a chronic source of inflammation in the body affects the general condition. At night, in humid weather and out of season, the joint may hurt more intensely.
The patient drastically limits the volume and range of movements of the arm, not being able to raise it more than ninety degrees, both in the frontal and lateral planes. This leads to muscle atrophy and a significant deterioration in the nutrition of the joint tissue.
- Third stage symptoms.Normally, if a patient comes to the doctor in the third stage of the disease, he practically cannot move his arm.The arm does not rise, does not move to the side, the joint swells and increases. The muscles atrophy, and the pain syndrome is so intense that when you try to lift your hand, tremors appear in your fingers. In most cases, there are contractures in the shoulder joint, “frozen shoulder” syndrome.
Methods for treating shoulder arthrosis
In fact, it is impossible to cure arthrosis, and even more so, it is impossible to do it at home. This disease is so dependent on many internal and external factors that it is almost never the root cause.
But the good news for patients in the first and second stages of the disease is that the development of osteoarthritis can be stopped. That is why doctors insist on early diagnosis of the disease and the beginning of treatment for shoulder arthrosis, when the joint tissue is only partially destroyed, there are no osteophytes and attempts can be made to restore normal nutrition to the joint.
Conservative therapy
The treatment of osteoarthritis always aims at two objectives: eliminating pain and, if possible, restoring the supply of the joint with the substances necessary for normal functioning.

- The supply of nutrients to tissues depends on what the patient ingests. The diet for osteoarthritis should exclude salt and alcohol.Meat and vegetable products containing purine bases, which increase the level of uric acid in the body, are also undesirable.Dairy dishes and steamed vegetables are recommended.
- Connecting medicines containing glucosamine and chondroitin, as well as collagen, which nourish the joint tissue. And daily consumption of regular gelatin in the form of jelly helps to enrich the menu with animal collagen.
- Local application of various warming, anti-inflammatory and chondroitin-containing ointments and balms activates blood circulation in the tissues surrounding the joint.
- If the pain syndrome is not intense, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is not recommended. If hand movements are accompanied by severe pain, NSAIDs can relieve pain and reduce inflammation. These medications will help reduce pain.
- If the shoulder swells and an inflammatory process begins, an ointment compress applied at night or rubbed with gels will have an excellent effect.
- Therapeutic exercises are an essential component for the successful treatment of shoulder osteoarthritis. But it is not recommended to overload the joint, as poorly distributed forces can lead to rapid destruction of the hyaline cartilage.
Therapeutic exercises for shoulder arthrosis and rules for their implementation
Special exercises will help develop the joint and give it mobility. You can do gymnastics alone at home. The main rules when performing exercises should be:
- regularity, that is, it is necessary to exercise daily for at least 15 minutes;
- performing exercises smoothly and without much effort.This is necessary to avoid further damaging the joint structures;
- obtaining moral pleasure during physical activity, which will help normalize the patient's emotional state.
Physiotherapy exercises in which hand movements do not cause pain are recommended. They are performed slowly, forcing the ligaments and muscles to gradually warm up and stretch.

- We offer the simplest and most useful exercises for arthrosis of the shoulder joint:
- Sitting on a chair, place your hands on your knees.Make circular movements with your shoulders: 5 times forward and then 5 times backward.
- Raise your arms up, pulling your shoulders and shoulder blades as high back as possible.Hold for a few seconds and then lower.Repeat 5-7 times.
- Extend your arms straight, palms down, to the sides.Fold your hands at the wrist joints, fingers should point up.Make circular movements with your shoulders: 5 times forward and then 5 times backward.
- Raise your bent arms above your head, with the fingers of one of them on the elbows of the opposite hand.Gently move your arms back until you feel a stretch in your shoulder joint.Perform the exercise 5 to 7 times.
- Place the palms of both hands behind your head, with the back of your hands and fingers pointing down.Move your hands so that your palms go down along your back to the area between your shoulder blades.Repeat the exercise 5-7 times.
- Place your left hand on your right elbow, move your right hand as far as possible behind your left shoulder until you feel a stretch in the shoulder joint.Perform the exercise 5 to 7 times.Switch hands and repeat the exercise with the other hand.
In the treatment of osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint, the following are recognized as effective: manual therapy, physiotherapy and sanatorium treatment. The use of traditional medicine methods is also considered justified.
Traditional methods of treatment and help at home
The main folk remedy for the treatment of arthrosis of the shoulder joint is herbal medicine, which allows the use of dried herbs and herbal decoctions for compresses, preparation of ointments and rubbing at home to normalize metabolism and restore nutrition to the joint in order to reduce pain.
- Ointment.Take 10 grams of dry leaves of hops, sweet clover and St. John's wort. Grind the herbs well and grind them together, add petroleum jelly and mix all the ingredients well.Apply the prepared ointment to the shoulder area. This will help reduce joint pain and inflammation.
- Friction.Pour five parts vodka or alcohol into one part crushed wild rosemary flowers. Then you need to infuse the medicine in a warm, dark place for 24 hours. The tincture is used externally to rub affected joints.
- Decoction.Pour corn silk (2 tablespoons) into two glasses of water, boil for 10 minutes, strain and drink one tablespoon four times a day.
- Compress. For the compress, you need to prepare 30 grams of dry oats in two glasses of water.Apply the prepared mixture to the sore shoulder for 30 minutes.
Alternative treatment for shoulder osteoarthritis
- Manual techniques - massages, manual therapy sessions, osteopathy - allow you to relieve muscle blockages, tensions and spasms, freeing the blood vessels and nerves that lead to the joint.
- Physiotherapy, in particular shock wave therapy, balneotherapy, mud therapy and other methods, are not recommended for use during an exacerbation, that is, when there is an active inflammatory process in the joint.
- Remission is an excellent reason for sanatorium treatment, after which lasting improvement is observed.
Surgical treatment of shoulder osteoarthritis

In cases of severe pain that prevents the patient from leading a normal life, the doctor may recommend surgery.
Most often, prosthetics are performed, that is, the destroyed joint is replaced with an endoprosthesis. If possible, they perform partial arthroplasty, altering only part of the shoulder joint.
Surgery is used in rare cases, as any surgical intervention, especially related to the installation of an intra-articular prosthesis, can lead to complications and a long recovery period.
Osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint is an insidious and dangerous disease in which a person's motor activity is impaired and quite severe pain is observed.
It is important to treat this disease promptly at the first minor symptoms, avoiding further destruction of the joint.
The patient must remember that the success of osteoarthritis treatment largely depends on his efforts and activities, and not on medications.
